Earlier this month, a matchmaking company in China’s Guangdong province had some employees dress as Santarinas — in red Christmas outfits and go-go boots – and march to a college campus. Their mission: to find out “innocent and good-looking” college girls as companions for the company’s clients.

Rat meat, also eaten in China, became popular in rural Taiwan in the 1940s and 1950s among people who could not afford chicken or pork. Ho-la, a rural eatery at Taiwan's Chiayi county, serves 10 rat-themed dishes, including rat soup, black pepper-dipped and deep-fried rat. The diner goes through around 18 kg (40 lb) of rat meat per day.

A plague of 2 billion mice in central China was described just days ago as being so bad that it resembled a scene from a horror movie with roads and hillsides turned black with rodents.

But in a remarkable display of entrepreneurship, businessmen are catching, shipping and selling the eastern field mice, also known locally as rats, to the southern city of Guangzhou, where restaurants are reportedly offering rodent banquets to diners notorious for their unusual tastes.

Mass murder of mice not enough

About one million mice, up to 40 tons, have been poisoned to death in the past 20 days in the Dongting Lake area of central China's Hunan Province. However, authorities said the dead mice were not buried and their remains could be seen almost everywhere.

Man Bites Dog. Dog Dies.

A man in Hebei Province tried to chase off a dog that was attacking his puppy, and when that failed, he threw himself on the dog and bit it on the neck, eventually killing it, according to the local Yanzhao Cosmopolitan News. He suffered deep cuts to his arms, it said. The puppy survived. Villagers said that a wound on the dead dog’s neck could have been caused only by biting. They also said the man was known for biting people in fights.
